On-Campus Housing
Most EAP students choose to apply to live in the International House (I-House), an on-campus living/learning community which is dedicated to fostering friendship between people of all cultures. In each apartment there is a mix of four or five international and American students sharing a four-bedroom/one-bath furnished apartment with kitchen, dining area and living room. Students assigned to any undergraduate college may live in I-House.
Admission to I-House is competitive and based in large part on the willingness of the applicant to be involved in programming activities in the I-House community. Unfortunately, some qualified applicants may not be admitted due to limited space.
Students may also apply to live in other on-campus housing. Reciprocity students are encouraged to apply concurrently to the On-Campus Housing Office in case they are not accommodated in I-House. On-line applications for the on-campus housing waitlist are available at http://hds.ucsd.edu/housing/waitlist.asp.
Before applying for housing, you should be aware of the On-Campus Housing Notes and Policies below. The application deadline for Fall arrival is June 1. Although applications received after the June 1 date will be considered for the wait list, it is highly recommended that you submit your application by the deadline in order to receive preferred consideration. For Winter or Spring quarter arrival it is advisable to apply as early as possible, and every effort will be made to secure housing space for you. A housing contract is sent when a space is available for you. There are no housing application fees.
On-Campus Housing Notes and Policies
- Undergraduate college assignment at UCSD is an academic placement, and does not imply housing placement. You must apply for housing separately.
- At the I-House a large percentage of the rooms are for single occupancy, although a single room cannot be guaranteed.
- A meal plan is mandatory in all on-campus housing contracts.
- Contracts for on-campus housing are for the full academic year, unless your UCSD period of study is only one or two quarters.
- It is important to know clearly in advance the residence life philosophy and policies that you will be expected to observe if you decide to live on campus. UCSD is an academically rigorous institution, and living on campus supports students' academic goals while also providing convenience and a social atmosphere. In order to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve academic success, all residents are expected to adhere to some basic community guidelines:
- California State Law and University policy prohibiting the consumption of alcohol for persons under the age of 21 is strictly enforced. Students over the age of 21 may consume alcohol in "private" living areas (i.e., in apartments and bedrooms, but not in public lounges, outdoors, on apartment balconies, etc.). Large volumes of alcohol (kegs, party balls, etc.) are strictly prohibited in residential facilities.
- UCSD has been designated a non-smoking campus. Smoking is prohibited in all residential facilities.
- To ensure an environment conducive to studying, quiet hours are observed on weekdays after 11:00 p.m. and on weekends after 1:00 a.m.
Off-Campus Housing
If you prefer to live off-campus, there is a variety of housing available nearby, and assistance is offered during orientation in September. For more information, refer to the UCSD Commuter Student Services website: http://offcampushousing.ucsd.edu, the International Student/Scholar Office Housing Webpage or you may also check with the California Housing Board.
