Modern Japan

Why you should go

The seminar explores the blurred outcome of the political culture established in Reconstruction Japan. The seminar explores two questions: How has Japan navigated the narrow straits between perpetrator and victim during WW II? To help explore this question, the seminar also asks: how have other countries dealt with profound historical trauma and nation building?

Who should go

While students from all colleges are welcome, this program will be particularly relevant to Eleanor Roosevelt College students who want to make progress toward their Making of the Modern World general education requirement while exploring Japan region through a series of historically-focused tours. It satisfies MMW 15 for four-year students, or MMW 122 for transfer students. SOCI 148GS is an upper division sociology course appropriate for any student interested in the connections between state and civil society.  This second course fulfills a number of college's social science requirement, as well as major requirements for the Sociology and International Studies majors as well as for the African Studies minor.   Consult your college academic advisor to determine how the courses will apply to your graduation requirements.
